ESPN.com/sportsbook: Which NFL clubs are in dire need of a new player?
According to ESPN NFL insider Darren Rovell, the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars are among the clubs with a significant need at quarterback.
Rovell says the Dolphins, Bills and Falcons have a “huge” need for a franchise quarterback.
The Bills have been the best-performing franchise in the NFL over the last three seasons, and the Bills could be one of the league’s hottest franchises entering next season.
The Eagles have been inconsistent and turnover-prone during the last two seasons, but the team could be poised for a big jump in 2014.
Roveell also said that the Jets are the favorite to land former Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Cassel.
The Patriots are currently in the middle of a playoff race, and they could be the hottest team in the AFC if Cassel were to land in New England.
But the Patriots have had a lot of turnover during the past two seasons.
With quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo expected to miss the season, the Patriots could be forced to rely on backup Ryan Mallett and rookie Jacoby Brissett.
Brissett is a former No. 2 overall draft pick by the Patriots.
The 27-year-old Brisset has been a solid backup, but it could be a difficult task to get him back on the field for the Patriots this season.
Rovella said that he believes the Jets could land Brissetts free agent.
Rovell also said the Jets have the best chance to land Carson Wentz, who is expected to be the team’s starter in 2014 if not for a shoulder injury.
Rovelli said that it’s unlikely the Jets will trade for Wentz.
