The world is fast becoming a more connected place, with new cars now capable of receiving data from millions of sensors at once, and even other cars and trucks equipped with cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, all able to monitor a driver and keep an eye on the road for hazards.
And with new tech companies making moves to take advantage of the new capabilities, it’s a good time to consider what it means to be a “smart” car.
As a result, automakers are trying to find new ways to combine the technology with a human operator, while simultaneously creating a system that’s both human-friendly and capable of handling complex situations.
But that’s a huge leap, and one that will require a whole new generation of engineers, developers, and product designers.
One thing is certain: Automakers have been making significant strides in artificial intelligence for decades.
The world has become a smarter place, and with it, so have automakers.
But the process of making that leap into machine learning is still a work in progress.
A startup that has made significant strides into AI recently, called Micron, says it’s made significant progress in its own research in machine learning.
That company, which is headquartered in Cupertino, California, says its technology can understand the way a car’s sensors work, how a car is driven, and can automatically interpret how people react to a car.
Micron says its machine learning system is capable of performing nearly 90% of what a human driver can.
The company’s technology can also automatically recognize how a driver reacts to hazards, such as a car that’s in reverse or a roadblock, and automatically drive the car to a safe stop.
Microns founder and CEO Ben Zettl says his company’s research focuses on how people perceive, think, and react to cars.
He says Micron’s research has helped the company learn how to develop a way for cars to react to human driving by using natural language processing and AI, and that this has led to some new ideas about how cars should operate in the future.
Micronics, a semiconductor company, and the Micron group have been working together for the past two years to build an artificial intelligence (AI) system capable of understanding the way cars work, as well as how people are likely to respond.
Micrones, the company Micron co-founded, is the first company to work directly with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on a system capable to recognize a driver’s facial expressions and emotions, as a driver.
Microneys system is being developed in collaboration with NHTSA and other government agencies.
The agency is also developing an automated, driver-focused safety technology.
Zettler says that the system, known as the Intelligent Driving System (IDS), is able to learn from a driver in an instant by learning from the environment around the car, and then applying the same principles to its own sensors.
“The system learns to anticipate the way that a human would react to the situation, and is able apply these to its real-world systems,” he said.
Microwaves are currently used in the automotive world to detect and measure vibrations.
Zetler said the system can learn from what a car sees and hear, and how a person will react to certain sounds, and apply these skills to its driverless systems.
The system also has the ability to “understand” what a driver is doing by analyzing data about the road ahead and the traffic patterns that may be causing problems.
“We can see the way the driver is driving, see the road conditions around them, and learn what they’re looking for, so that we can apply this knowledge to the real world,” Zettle said.
This system, which the company is calling Intelligent Driving Simulator, will be available to automakers in 2019.
Microns new system, however, isn’t meant to be used in production vehicles, because Micrones technology can’t detect the car’s actual characteristics or driving style.
“A lot of times in the industry we’re seeing [cars] getting really big, and we don’t see how we can have a car like the Tesla,” Zelller said.
In addition to cars, Micrones system is also being used to develop sensors for the driverless future.
Zellers claims the system is currently used to detect motion in real-time, in order to anticipate a driver who is not paying attention to the road.
“In other words, if the system detects that the driver’s eyes are moving, and he’s not paying much attention to what’s going on around him, the system then will take a more advanced approach to determine what the driver might be looking at,” Zetl said.
The autonomous driving system could also detect the speed of the car and the way in which the driver walks, so it could react to situations that might be unfamiliar to the driver.
